CCTV caught the harrowing moment in the Indian state of Uttar Pradesh on Saturday.
The man – identified as 32-year-old Mahendra – was seen standing inside the trench while speaking to two of his colleagues, who were sat closer to the top of the hole.
Loose soil then suddenly gave way behind him before slamming his body to the bottom of the pit, completely burying him.
The avalanche of soil trapped Mahendra beneath the dirt and under water in mere seconds.

His panicked co-workers immediately jumped into the hole to try and save him.
Seven men scrambled as they tried to clear the soil, shouting and attempting to call for an excavator operator nearby.
Mahendra worked for the local Waterworks Department and had been fixing a damaged drinking water line at the time of the terrifying accident.
The pit he had been working in was an estimated 14ft deep.
His colleagues eventually uncovered him using a JCB machine and pulled him free.
Mahendra was then rushed to the hospital, where doctors later confirmed him dead.
His older brother, Rajkumar, said visible cracks had formed in the ground beforehand and that other workers had warned officials about the danger.
Rajkumar claimed that Junior Engineer Narendra Singh ignored those concerns.
He has alleged that Singh verbally abused workers and forced Mahendra to get into the pit.
Family members and co-workers later protested at the hospital.
They briefly stopped authorities from sending the body for a post-mortem, demanding action.
Municipal Commissioner Prem Prakash Meena and other officials said safety measures had been in place.
They announced that a three-member committee would investigate the incident over the next three days.
Authorities have confirmed that financial assistance for the victim’s family had been approved.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath said the police had launched an investigation into the tragic ordeal.
