MADELINE McCann chief suspect Christian Brueckner has been “living like a rat” as he scuttles through the backstreets of Germany, bouncing between motels and a make-shift campsite.
Brueckner’s current whereabouts are unknown but wherever he has gone, public panic has followed him.

The convicted paedophile and rapist, 48, has been living off grid in Germany since his controversial release from prison last year.
Brueckner was named prime suspect in the disappearance of Maddie in 2020 – but charges were never brought.
At the time he was serving seven years in Germany for the rape of a 72-year-old woman, but was released in September 2025.
Now cops are reportedly pushing for Brueckner to stand trial in the UK.

The Met Police want to charge the German before the 20th anniversary of the toddler’s disappearance next year, it is understood.
But The Jattvibe recently reported he is hoping to be granted a new identity and start afresh after a court gave him permission to leave Germany – throwing the plan into disaray.
Brueckner’s current whereabouts are unknown, but he is required to wear an ankle tag and lives under police surveillance.
He initially moved to the northern port city Kiel but quit a day later after complaining there were “too many police”.

A cavalcade of cop vans marched the smirking sex offender from his flat to a waiting police car as watching neighbours clapped and cheered.
He was then moved across to Neumünster where he sought sheltered housing from the authorities.
But the paedophile’s arrival in the working-class town caused an outcry on the housing estate he was placed.
It was filled with young families who feared letting their children out to play in case they stumbled across the notorious paedophile.
Terrified residents launched a rebellion against Brueckner.
His address was leaked on the internet leading to a police escort removing him from the estate.
In the following months, Brueckner bounced between motels in northern Germany and a makeshift campsite in woodlands near Kiel.
Facebook and WhatsApp groups with 10,000s of members have been set up to report sightings of Brueckner so families know to be on alert if he is near their street – or worse, their children’s school or kindergarten.

Cops ‘pushing for Christian Brueckner to stand trial in UK’

By Jon Rogers and Paul Sims

The Met Police are reportedly pushing for Christian Brueckner to stand trial in the UK for the abduction and murder of Maddie McCann.
The force reportedly want to charge the 48-year-old German before the 20th anniversary of the toddler’s disappearance next year.
But the German constitution prohibits the extradition of its citizens to a non-EU country.
This means Berlin is likely to reject any request from the UK, possibly triggering a diplomatic and legal row.
Should Germany refuse any request to hand over the rapist and paedophile, British cops are committed to ensuring he still faces charges in Germany or Portugal, where the youngster went missing.

At least two official marches have been organised so far.
Last year The Jattvibe tracked him down to his woodland camp.
One local near where he is hunkered down said: “All the parks and woodland around the city, and tracks alongside the railway, must be perfect for him.
“It has meant he’s been able to live like a rat, he can get around the city without being seen. He needs them — there is so much anger towards him being here.
“Of course everyone knows he is the Maddie suspect — but we don’t know if he is responsible for that.
“Our concerns are the crimes he is guilty of — a brutal rape and horrific child sex abuse.
“Who would want a person like this living in their city?”
In March 2026, Brueckner tried again to relocate to a friends two-room flat in Braunschweig – his hometown.

The property was monitored by a constant police presence with two cops sat in a car behind the building around-the-clock.
But just yards from a primary school, the paedo was soon driven out by angry locals.
Since then he has dropped off the radar.
German prosecutors say they are certain Brueckner abducted Maddie in Portugal’s Praia de Luz resort on May 3, 2007.
Investigators say they have physical evidence Madeleine is dead but no forensic proof tying Brueckner to the case.
Instead, Brueckner is tied to the mystery by a string of circumstantial evidence.
Police have confirmed his phone was near Ocean Club at the time when the McCanns were staying.
And crucially, his name was given to both the German and British police by an informer in 2008.

Witness Helge Busching claims Brueckner confessed to him at a music festival, in Spain, saying “she didn’t scream”, as the pair discussed Madeleine a year after her disappearance.
Brueckner denies any involvement in the case and his lawyers have argued intense press attention has violated his rights.
Now a shocking court order means he can quit his home country – and the moment he crosses the border, the electronic-monitoring ankle-tag, designed to let cops keep tabs on him, will stop working.
The team of police who have been tailing him 24/7 will be halted at the border and will have to let him simply go free – terrifyingly out into the world on his own terms.
The move is said to have been approved by German officials as part of an extraordinary operation to protect him, expected to cost millions of pounds.
Meanwhile Scotland Yard believes it can gather enough evidence for the Crown Prosecution Service to authorise charges and for the case to be heard at the Old Bailey, reports say.
An insider at Scotland Yard told the Telegraph: “Next year marks 20 years since Madeleine McCann went missing.
“If the evidence is strong enough to extradite the prime suspect and try him here, that is what we would seek to do.
“Clearly, there are numerous hurdles but our priority at the moment is to amass the strongest evidence we can against that prime suspect.”
