A STUDENT ended up in hospital after mistakenly downing half a bottle of fabric conditioner when she mistook it for a bottle of water following a night out.

Lukia Pardoe went on a ‘uni leavers’ social on May 8th and returned home at 1am after a heavy night of drinking.

The 20-year-old woke up during the night and reached for a bottle of water that was on her desk, not realising she had grabbed a bottle of ‘Fresh Linen’ fabric refresher in the dark.

While Lukia admits the liquid burned her throat right away, she dismissed the pain as having eaten a hot pizza before going to bed.

It was not until the following morning that Lukia saw the empty cleaning product and realised what she had done.

The politics students says she began ‘freaking out’ as she was already experiencing stomach cramps and coughing, while suffering a chemical taste in her mouth.

Lukia was rushed to Warwick Hospital by her flatmate and said she was seen quickly due to the amount of the toxic liquid she drank.

After blood tests and an ECG test, Lukia was prescribed charcoal tablets to help remove the toxins.

While Lukia has now recovered, she said she still has a bad cough and the chemical taste in her mouth.

Lukia, from Birmingham, said: “It was a uni leavers event because I’m in my final year. I obviously had quite a lot to drink.

“It happened in the middle of the night. I didn’t realise I had a bottle of fabric refresher on the side of my desk.

“I don’t actually know why [it was there]. I had gone back to my uni house after not being there for ages and I didn’t know what was on my desk.

“I went to sleep and there were three bottles on my desk, two of them were water and one was fabric freshener. I woke up at 3am and I was so thirsty because I had been drinking.

“I unscrewed what I thought was a water bottle. I thought I had burned my mouth on some pizza or something but it was just the chemicals.

“I had half of the bottle. I was still really drunk and I carried on drinking it. I just remember thinking this water tastes really bad.

“Throughout the night I must have gone downstairs to get about 10 more glasses of water. I must have been doing it to get the chemical taste out of my mouth.

“When I woke up, I realised what I had done. My friend came into my room and I looked at the bottle and stopped breathing for a second.

“I said ‘I’ve drunk half of that bottle’. I was swearing and everything. I called 111.”

The third-year student said the consultant could not stop laughing after she explained what had happened.

Lukia said doctors explained she had flushed out most of the chemical by drinking multiple glasses of water during the night.

Lukia said: “They sent an ambulance but my friend could drive me so I cancelled it and she drove me there.

“They said because of the volume I had they were keen to get me in quickly. I went into this room with the nurse and I had the bottle with me to test it.

“I got it out and she couldn’t breathe laughing, she had to leave the room. She was laughing for 10 minutes.

“They explained that because I drank so much water afterwards, I got a lot out of my system.

“They gave me charcoal tablets to absorb all the toxins. I just have a chemical taste and a lot of coughing. At the time I had quite bad stomach cramps.”

Lukia posted a video about the incident online, which has more than 600,000 views.

She now sees it as a funny story and vowed to never keep any cleaning products near her bed again.

Lukia said: “I freaked out, I’ve never freaked out like that before.

“My family and friends keep laughing at me, I haven’t heard the end of it. I’m not going to keep anything like that on my desk again.

“It is a funny story. I’m very grateful nothing worse happened.”

Commenters on Lukia’s post have also found the incident funny.

One said: “How did you drink half a bottle, surely the first mouthful was rancid.”

Another said: “At least you will have the nicest smelling breath.”

Another said: “Oh my god the panic I would go into.”

Astonish commented on Lukia’s post saying: “We don’t recommend drinking the products.”
