BATHROOM clutter has a habit of appearing just when guests are due – but a few smart swaps can hide the mess fast.

The loo is one of the hardest rooms to keep looking calm. It is used in a hurry, often by the whole family, and somehow ends up with spare toilet rolls, half-used bottles, toothpaste, towels and cleaning sprays all fighting for space.

Open shelves that looked lovely on Instagram can quickly turn into a very public display of everything you forgot to put away.Waleed Shahid, from Royal Bathrooms, the British bathroom specialists, said: “The best bathroom storage hides the everyday chaos without making the room harder to use.

“People often think they need more space, but what they really need is storage that suits how the room is used in real life.”

Here, Waleed reveals the seven swaps you should make to hide that clutter before hosting.

1. Swap open shelves for a mirrored cabinet

Neatly folded towels and perfect little jars look lovely online, but most busy bathrooms do not stay like that for long. Open shelves quickly fill with half-used bottles, spare toothbrushes and whatever nobody knew where else to put.

A mirrored cabinet, meanwhile, gives the room the same useful wall space without putting everything on show.

Waleed said: “A mirrored cabinet is one of the easiest guest-ready swaps because it does two jobs at once.

“It hides toiletries and daily essentials, while the mirror helps the room feel brighter and more practical. It is much easier to keep a bathroom looking tidy when the small stuff is behind a door.”

2. Swap a pedestal basin for a vanity unit

A pedestal basin can leave the bathroom looking open, but it also wastes the space underneath. That gap often becomes home to cleaning bottles, bath toys or a random basket that never looks very neat.

A vanity unit turns the same footprint into proper hidden storage.

Waleed said: “The space under the basin is too valuable to waste in a family bathroom or guest bathroom.

“A vanity unit gives you somewhere to hide spare toiletries, cleaning products and everyday clutter. It keeps the floor clearer, which instantly makes the room feel more organised.”

3. Swap loose bottles for a shower niche or caddy

Shampoo bottles balanced on the floor or squeezed along the bath edge make a bathroom look messy fast. They also get knocked over, leave rings and make cleaning more annoying.

A proper shower niche or neat caddy keeps everything in one place.

Waleed said: “Shower products need a fixed home. A niche is ideal if you are renovating, but a well-chosen caddy can also make a big difference.

“Keeping bottles off the floor and away from the bath edge makes the shower area look cleaner and far less chaotic.”

4. Swap towel piles for hooks or a towel ladder

A pile of towels on the side looks messy even when the towels are clean. In a small bathroom, it can also make the room feel damp and crowded.

Hooks, rails or a towel ladder give towels somewhere obvious to go before guests arrive.

Waleed said: “Towels need storage that is easy to use, otherwise they end up dumped on the bath or basin.

“Hooks are great for family bathrooms because everyone can hang a towel quickly. A ladder rail can also work well if you want the room to feel tidier without using up cupboard space.”

5. Swap countertop clutter for drawer organisers

Toothpaste, razors, make-up and skincare can take over a basin area in days. Even expensive products look untidy if they are scattered across the counter.

Drawer organisers are a small swap, but they stop the daily essentials spilling out onto every surface.

Waleed said: “Bathroom drawers work best when they are divided properly. Small organisers keep products separated, so you can find what you need without emptying everything onto the counter.

“It is a simple way to make the basin area look clearer before guests use the room.”

6. Swap bulky floor baskets for wall storage

Floor baskets can be useful, but in a small bathroom they often make the room feel more cramped. They collect dust, get kicked around and add another obstacle in a space that is already tight.

Using the wall instead keeps the floor clearer and makes the room feel bigger.

Waleed said: “Getting storage off the floor is one of the quickest ways to make a small bathroom feel calmer.

“Wall-mounted cabinets, slim shelves with baskets or tall narrow units can hold the same clutter without making the floor feel crowded. More visible floor space makes the room look cleaner.”

7. Swap random spare loo rolls for closed storage

Nothing ruins the guest-ready look faster than spare loo rolls stacked beside the toilet. It is practical, but it rarely looks polished.

A small closed unit or basket with a lid keeps the essentials nearby without making them part of the decor.

Waleed said: “Spare loo rolls, cleaning wipes and sanitary products should be easy to reach but not necessarily visible.

“Closed storage keeps those essentials close without making the bathroom look cluttered. It is a small change, but it makes the room feel much more put together.”
