In a big blow to India ahead of the Commonwealth Games, country’s top middle-distance runner K M Deeksha has been caught in the doping net.Deeksha, who is the reigning national record holder in 1500 metres, has been notified that her sample has shown presence of banned substance.She has not been issued a provisional suspension as of now, however, the development cast a huge doubt about her eligibility for the Commonwealth Games.“She has been intimated after her samples have shown presence of a banned substance; however, she has not been issued a provisional suspension,” a source told The Tribune on Tuesday.“It was an out of competition test and the letter was issued in the last week of May,” the source added.Another source has said that her samples have shown presence of stanozolol, which is prohibited under the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) prohibited list in the category of anabolic agents.Deeksha faces a potential four-year suspension.Last year, she broke the national record at the Sound Running Track Fest in Los Angeles, where she finished third with a timing of 4:04.78 seconds. She bettered the previous mark set by Harmilan Bains of 4:05.39 at the National Open Athletics Championships 2021.Missing in actionDeeksha has not competed since winning the gold medal at the Indian Athletics Series 2, which was held in Jaipur on April 5, 2026. According to her coach SK Prasad who trains at the Madhya Pradesh Athletics Academy, Bhopal, Deeksha left the training centre last month.“She had been requesting for a no objection certificate (NOC) from us to start competing for Uttar Pradesh. She has already left our academy last month,” Prasad said.When asked about the issue at hand, Prasad said he had no information about it. “We do not have any information regarding any doping issue. Like I said she has already left our academy,” he added.
