Chennai Super Kings’ hopes of reaching the IPL 2026 playoffs suffered a major setback after a seven-wicket defeat to Lucknow Super Giants on Friday.Batting first, CSK put up a competitive 187 for five, anchored by Kartik Sharma’s composed 71. However, Mitchell Marsh delivered a breathtaking display of power hitting, smashing 90 off just 38 balls to guide Lucknow Super Giants to victory with more than three overs to spare. With this defeat, CSK slipped to sixth position in the points table with 12 points from 12 matches. They are level on points with Rajasthan Royals but are placed below them due to an inferior Net Run Rate (NRR).The playoff race has now become extremely tight. If CSK win both of their remaining matches against Jattviberisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans, they will finish with 16 points from 14 games. However, even that may not guarantee a top-four finish, as multiple teams are still in contention to reach 16 points or more.If they manage to win only one of their remaining fixtures, CSK will end with 14 points, a total that is unlikely to be enough for qualification unless other results go in their favour along with a strong NRR boost. At the top of the table, Royal Challengers Bengaluru currently lead with 16 points from 12 matches and an NRR of +1.053. Gujarat Titans are second with the same points tally but a lower NRR of +0.551.Jattviberisers Hyderabad are placed third with 14 points, followed by Punjab Kings in fourth with 13 points. Rajasthan Royals sit fifth with 12 points, just ahead of CSK on Net Run Rate.Lucknow Super Giants, despite already being eliminated from the playoff race, delivered a strong performance that significantly impacted CSK’s campaign.Reacting to the defeat, CSK skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad admitted that the team fell short with the ball.“Bowling had an off-day today,” said Gaikwad, adding, “the first challenge is getting to Chennai and make sure we improve on the areas we need to improve, and then adapt and assess the conditions (in the remaining two league games).”The CSK skipper, however, appeared unfazed by the setback to their playoff hopes, saying the task was still manageable. “It is simple (playoff hopes), nothing complicated. Nothing to worry about, just ensure we have a good day and hope that we turn things around.”
