Iran on Thursday urged BRICS nations to explicitly condemn the United States and Israel over what Tehran described as attacks on its sovereignty, with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi telling a BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in New Delhi that Western powers were pushing the world towards instability and conflict.Addressing the high-level gathering, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said BRICS must take “concrete action” against what he termed violations of international law and the politicisation of global institutions by Western powers.“Iran, therefore, calls upon BRICS member states and all responsible members of the international community to explicitly condemn violations of international law by the United States and Israel, including their illegal aggression against Iran, a member of BRICS,” Araghchi said.The Iranian foreign minister accused Washington and Tel Aviv of pursuing “illegal expansionism and warmongering”, claiming Iran had twice been subjected to attacks within less than a year based on “false claims,” contradicting assessments of the International Atomic Energy Agency and even the US intelligence community.Without detailing the specific incidents, the Iranian minister said Tehran had become the victim of coercive geopolitics and warned that instability in West Asia was damaging not only the region but also global economic interests.“Regional instability is a lose-lose proposition for all sides, including the aggressors,” he said.Positioning Iran’s confrontation with the West as part of a larger ideological struggle, Araghchi said Tehran’s resistance represented “the battle in defence of all of us, of the new world that we are building together”.He described BRICS as the symbol of an emerging multipolar order in which the Global South would become “a primary architect of the world’s future”. “What was once a lofty aspiration is now a reality, but it is a fragile reality,” he said, alleging that “imperial power in decline” was attempting to preserve its dominance through coercion, sanctions and military pressure.In remarks laden with anti-West rhetoric, the Iranian foreign minister accused Western capitals of enabling “genocide”, violating the sovereignty of nations and practising “state piracy on the high seas”.He argued that such actions persisted because of a “sense of impunity” that needed to be collectively challenged by BRICS nations.The speech reflected Tehran’s effort to leverage its recent entry into BRICS to deepen political solidarity among non-Western powers at a time when Iran faces continuing military, diplomatic and economic pressure from the US and its allies.Araghchi also struck a conciliatory note on diplomacy, saying Iran remained committed to peaceful engagement despite being prepared to defend itself militarily. “There is no such thing as a military solution to anything related to Iran,” he said, adding that the Iranian people were “peace-loving and do not seek war”.The remarks assumed added significance as India, the current BRICS Chair, has been attempting to maintain a careful diplomatic balance amid escalating tensions in West Asia, while emphasising dialogue, de-escalation and respect for international law.
