A month after the high-profile Twisha Sharma case triggered outrage over alleged domestic harassment, another disturbing case from Jaipur has reignited the debate around abuse within marriages.A 36-year-old woman allegedly died by suicide in Jaipur after years of alleged physical and verbal abuse by her husband, Gautam Meena, an executive engineer posted in Tonk. Police have now booked him for abetment to suicide and domestic cruelty after videos reportedly showing repeated assault surfaced from the woman’s mobile phone.According to the family, Anu Meena, who married Gautam Meena, an executive engineer in the Public Works Department, in 2015, had allegedly been subjected to physical and verbal abuse for years. Relatives claimed Gautam would often assault her, especially after consuming alcohol, reports NDTV.The couple’s 10-year-old son, Mahir, told investigators he had repeatedly witnessed his father beating his mother. Recalling one incident, he said Gautam returned home, smashed the television and assaulted Anu during an argument.“Dad would often hit Mom and torment her,” Mahir said, adding that his mother frequently suffered from low blood pressure and would ask him to prepare salt water whenever she felt unwell.Their eight-year-old daughter, Samayra, also described frequent quarrels between the couple, including arguments during social gatherings and family trips. On April 7, Anu allegedly died by suicide by hanging herself after enduring prolonged abuse. Family members claimed that before taking the extreme step, she made a video call to her husband and carried out the act during the call.Neighbours rushed to the spot and informed her family. Attempts were reportedly made to revive her through CPR, but she could not be saved.Anu’s mother, Maya, said her daughter had often spoken about the abuse but she never imagined the situation would end in tragedy. She also revealed that she had missed a call from Anu on the day of the incident and now feels she might have been able to prevent it.Days later, Mahir reportedly accessed his mother’s phone and recovered several videos, including footage allegedly showing Gautam verbally abusing Anu and her family inside a car.Anu’s brother, Neeraj Meena, said the family had repeatedly urged her to return home, but she stayed back hoping her husband would change. He alleged that Gautam would apologise after violent episodes, giving the family hope that the situation might improve. He further claimed that even after the incident, Gautam showed little remorse and allegedly remarked that spending a few days in jail “would not be a problem”.Police have launched an investigation into the matter. Statements of family members have been recorded, while authorities are examining CCTV footage and other evidence as part of the probe.
