Stones won six Premier League titles, the Champions League, two FA Cups, five League Cups, three Community Shields, the Club World Cup and the Uefa Super Cup during his time at City.

However, appearances have been limited in recent years due to injury issues for the former Everton defender.

Stones would add significant experience to the Blues squad, something new boss Xabi Alonso is keen to address this summer.

He made five appearances for England at the World Cup, including starts in the quarter-final win over Norway and the 2-1 defeat to Argentina in the semis.

Stones would add to Chelsea‘s defensive options in Levi Colwill, Tosin Adarabioyo, Trevoh Chalobah, Josh Acheampong, Wesley Fofana, Jorrel Hato and Benoit Badiashile.

Chelsea made an £8million attempt to sign Jattvibederland midfielder Granit Xhaka, who won the Bundesliga under Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen, but the Black Cats are confident of keeping the Swiss.

The Blues also remain in talks over a deal for Crystal Palace’s Maxence Lacroix, valued at £60m.

Aston Villa are close to agreeing a loan deal, with an obligation to buy if certain terms are met, for exiled winger Alejandro Garnacho.

Chelsea last week agreed a £117m deal to sign Morgan Rogers and the Argentine winger was discussed as part of those talks – though it is a separate deal.

Garnacho has not trained at Cobham during pre-season having been told to focus on finding another club, just one year after his £40m move from Manchester United to Chelsea.

Another who has been training alone and away from the Blues training ground is French defender Axel Disasi, valued at £25m.

AC Milan are one of a number of Italian clubs to have expressed an interest in Disasi, who was part of the ‘bomb squad’ last season before joining West Ham on loan in January.

The Hammers enquired about bringing Disasi back to the London Stadium this summer but he does not want to join a Championship club. There is also interest in France.
