Former Kapurthala District Mahila Congress president Sangeeta Dhir has questioned the Congress leadership over her removal from the post and expulsion from the party, saying she had devoted nearly three decades to the organisation but was treated in an “extremely unfortunate and painful” manner.Punjab Pradesh Mahila Congress Working President Baljit Kaur, in a letter dated August 11, 2026, removed Dhir from the post of district president and expelled her from the Congress with immediate effect. The letter cited repeated complaints and reports regarding her alleged involvement in anti-party activities, which the organisation said were contrary to party discipline.Dhir, however, rejected the allegations and said she had been regularly participating in party programmes and speaking to the media in her capacity as district Mahila Congress president. “If I was actually involved in anti-party activities, why did the party leadership not raise any objection for such a long period?” she asked. She alleged that the party was ignoring hardworking women and grassroots workers while giving greater importance to those engaged in “pleasing certain leaders”. Dhir also said she was now resigning from the Congress with a heavy heart after nearly three decades of service.Questioning the manner in which her expulsion letter surfaced in the media, Dhir said copies circulating publicly reportedly carried different years — August 11, 2025, and August 11, 2026 — despite having the same reference number. She sought an explanation from the party leadership over the discrepancy and the decision to release the letter to the media.Dhir had been associated with Mahila Congress politics in Kapurthala for several years and represented the district organisation at various party programmes. She also participated in a Congress protest in Phagwara in March 2026 against the Aam Aadmi Party government as district Mahila Congress president. She further alleged that certain people had been working against her and conveying incorrect information about her to senior party leaders. She warned that sidelining committed grassroots workers in favour of those who merely flatter leaders could ultimately harm the organisation. The action has triggered discussion within Congress circles in Kapurthala, particularly given Dhir’s long association with the district Mahila Congress organisation.
