Priyansh Arya and Cooper Connolly wreaked havoc as Punjab Kings posted the highest total of the Indian Premier League season and defeated Lucknow Super Giants by 54 runs. The 182-run stand between the duo was the season’s highest as Arya and Connolly led the Kings to 254/7. Their stand came off just 80 balls with 16 sixes and 12 fours. Earlier, the 148-run stand between Rohit Sharma and Ryan Rickelton, and the 139-run partnership between Shreyas Iyer and Prabhsimran Singh were leading the charts.Emerging as a batting powerhouse in the ongoing IPL, having had won four matches while chasing, the Kings got a chance to bat first for the first time in the tournament. The side lost Prabhsimran in the very first over before Arya and Connolly joined forces. It was the slowest start for the Kings in the powerplay, scoring 63/1. The left-handed batters then gathered 66 between the 7th and 11th overs. However, the scoring went full throttle in the 13th over as the duo smashed Aiden Markram for 32 runs. Markram, the part-time off-spinner who was introduced to claim a wicket, conceded five sixes. While Connolly smashed three, Arya hammered two as Markram conceded the most runs in an over in this edition.Arya scored a 19-ball 50, delivering with minimal footwork and maximum bat speed. He was sailing smoothly towards his first century of the season. However, he was caught at the boundary by Mitch Marsh after posting 93 off 37 balls, with four fours and nine sixes.Connolly took 35 balls for his 50, but scored his next 37 off just 12. He could have been sent back early if LSG skipper Rishabh Pant had asked for the DRS. Left-arm seamer Mohsin Khan rapped Connolly on the pads, and while Pant did not seem interested in using the technology, replays showed that the ball would have hit the stumps.Chasing a mammoth total, LSG started steadily. The side scored 61 in the powerplay, and achieved the 100-run mark within 10 overs. However, the total proved too steep. Skipper Pant (43 off 23 balls, with one four and four sixes) and Marsh (40 off 28 balls, with three fours and two sixes) remained the main contributors, while it was Ayush Badoni (35 off 40 balls, with five fours and one six) started off well for the side.
