Real Madrid officially confirmed the news today in a statement.

It said: “Following tests carried out today on our player Kylian Mbappé by the Real Madrid Medical Services, he has been diagnosed with a semitendinosus muscle injury in his left leg.”

Los Blancos said his recovery will be “monitored”.

He suffered the injury in Real Madrid’s 1-1 draw with Real Betis on Friday evening.

After league leaders Barcelona won on Saturday it leaves Madrid 11 points adrift of their bitter rivals in LaLiga.

With five games to go Alvaro Arbeloa’s team will need the Catalans to have a miracle-like slip up to have any chance of regaining the title and denying Barcelona a second consecutive triumph.

Mbappe looks sure to miss El Clasico on May 10 – a clash which could mathematically decide this year’s winners of the title.

The update suddenly throws the 2018 World Cup winner into a race to get fit for the 2026 tournament being held in the USA, Canada and Mexico.

After losing to Argentina in the final despite scoring a hat-trick and scooping up the golden boot in the 2022 World Cup – the devastating Frenchman would have been seeking to go one better this year.

But we might not see Mbappe line up in France‘s new-look frontline, containing the likes of Michael Olise, Ousmane Dembele, Hugo Ekitike and Rayan Cherki.

It could be argued that France’s abundance of talent at the top will cope without the Real Madrid forward, but they are sure to want their star man at the tournament.

He has scored 24 goals in 28 LaLiga appearances this season as he leads the race for the golden boot.

The star is looking to retain the award after scoring a staggering 31 goals last term – however Mallorca’s Vedat Muriqi is on his tail with 21 goals.

Mbappe’s recent injury adds to a knock he sustained against Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena, as the Bavarians beat Madrid 6-4 on aggregate.

He was seen wearing a plaster on his face after being caught in the previous game.
