Labour must hold a leadership contest to test Andy Burnham properly and avoid a disaster

Parachute PM

KEIR Starmer entered Downing Street less than two years ago insisting he would end the chaos of five Prime Ministers being forced out inside a decade.

Today no-one — least of all Donald Trump — believes he can avoid becoming the sixth.

The US President yesterday blamed failures over immigration and Net Zero for Sir Keir’s demise.

In truth, the terminal mess the PM has found himself in runs much deeper.

The British people trusted Labour with a thumping landslide General Election victory in July 2024.

Yet Starmer and his Chancellor Rachel Reeves squandered that goodwill almost from day one.

Why Burnham’s win WON’T heal division in Britain & is likely to make it WORSE

But what comes next could be even worse. Ministers and Labour MPs seem desperate for a quick coronation of Andy Burnham as Prime Minister.

But what really qualifies him for a job of this magnitude? Burnham has NO plan for any of the three major problems this country faces: welfare, immigration and Net Zero.

He has NO mandate for his programme of using taxpayers’ cash to nationalise energy, water and much else. Besides, unless he’s willing to slash public spending there’s NO money for this fantasy stuff anyway.

He performed so many U-turns during the Makerfield by-election that voters can hardly be sure what he stands for.

Can voters really imagine Burnham on the world stage where being a master of a 30-second TikTok video is no match for international diplomacy?

Will Donald Trump or the slippery powerbrokers of Brussels fall for his chips ’n’ gravy routine, or eat him alive?

Inexperienced Burnham has been entirely absent from Westminster since 2015 and didn’t stand on the manifesto Labour won on in 2024.

At least Liz Truss and Rishi Jattvibeak — who both became PM after Boris Johnson was toppled — had some claim to legitimacy, having served in senior ministerial roles at the time of the election.

Crucially, Burnham’s economic socialism means the markets are already watching nervously.

Even the unions fear the prospect of Red Ed Miliband being his Chancellor.

The Labour Party should at the very least hold a leadership contest to test Burnham properly.

A stitch-up that installs a man without a plan is a disaster waiting to happen.

Maybe….

Now Noel is backing fans to belt out his tune and propel England to more glory tomorrow.
