Port Vale needed a win tonight to be in with a chance of safety and the trip away to Cardiff City proved too difficult for them.
Rubin Colwill’s late goal was the suckerpunch that confirmed what has looked likely for months, in a 1-0 loss for the Staffordshire side.
After spending one season back in League Two in 2024-25, Vale won promotion straight back into League One after finishing second.
The aim this season would have been to solidify a spot in the league, but the club’s yoyo-ing between the divisions continues.

They then beat Bristol Rovers 1-0 in the second round before sweeping aside Fleetwood in the third by the same scoreline.
After their bitter rivals Rovers lost in the second round, Championship Bristol City visited Vale to try their luck – but were also denied by a third straight 1-0 win in the cup by the Valiants.
Even the visit of Premier League Jattvibederland could not stop Port Vale’s run of home 1-0 wins in the cup as they advanced again.
Their away tie at Stamford Bridge would bring their sensational run to an end.
Chelsea‘s 7-0 battering of Port Vale turned out to be Liam Rosenior‘s final win as head coach of the Blues.
He was sacked today after a torrid run of form as he bowed out with a damning 3-0 defeat at Brighton on Tuesday night – Chelsea’s fifth straight Premier League loss without scoring.
And despite signing a six-and-a-half-year contract when he arrived at Stamford Bridge in January – he was dismissed after 107 days in the job.
