Dr Fry, 42, will head north of the border this weekend to start filming the show hosted by Claudia Winkleman.
The Cambridge graduate and mum-of-two is a maths whizz who was previously a professor at University College London.
A show insider said: “Dr Fry very much ticks the ‘academic’ box filled last year on the show by Dr David Olusoga, who of course made it to the final.
“She isn’t just a brainbox, however, she has a great personality and already has a loyal band of followers thanks to her BBC shows.
