At an age when a lot of women are busy balancing family responsibilities, 35-year-old Prabhjot Kaur has proven that dreams never fade if they are nurtured with determination and the support of loved ones. For Prabhjot — a homemaker and a mother of two — marriage and motherhood were not an end of her sporting ambitions. Instead, they became the beginning of an inspiring second innings, powered by the unwavering support of her husband.Since stepping back onto a badminton court around a year ago, she has won multiple medals at state and district tournaments — the latest being the gold medal in the women’s singles 35+ category in the District Badminton Championship in July. She also won the bronze medal in the state championship at Jalandhar last year and the silver medal at a tournament in Faridkot.Married for the past 11 years, Prabhjot had once nurtured dreams of making a mark in badminton. She played the game before her marriage, but had to quit due to lack of encouragement needed to pursue the sport.“Like many girls, I was told that studies were more important that sports. I had to leave badminton but the dream always remained alive somewhere in my heart,” Prabhjot recalls. The turning point in her life came three years ago when her elder son, now nine years old, joined WTT Panthers Academy for badminton coaching under coach Jaswinder Singh, alias Jassi. Watching her son train reignited her passion for the game. Around a year ago, she finally decided to return to the court with support from her husband, Jagdeep Singh, a businessperson.“I always wanted to fly higher and my husband game me the wings,” she said.According to Prabhjot, her husband’s words were: “I am with you. Start playing again and fulfil your dreams.” “Those words changed my life,” said the shuttler. The couple’s younger son is four years old.Along with looking after her family, Prabhjot follows a disciplined training schedule. She attends two practice sessions — one at a gym under the guidance of her husband, who helps improve her fitness, strength and flexibility, and another on the badminton court with the coach.Prabhjot credits both of them for her success. “My husband never let me doubt myself. My coach has never been greedy for money. Instead, he has always motivated me to work hard and reminded me that dedication and perseverance are key to success.”Prabhjot believes family support is crucial for women chasing their dreams. “Strong support helps women achieve their goals much faster. I am fortunate to have two pillars of strength — my husband and my coach, who always believed in me,” she says. The shuttler now dreams of achieving more success for herself, along with seeing her children excel in the game.“The biggest dream of my life is to see both my sons become international badminton players. I will do everything possible to help them realise that dream,” she said.Through her journey, Prabhjot also wants to inspire countless women who have sacrificed their ambitions for marriage or motherhood.“I want to motivate every woman who has given up on her dreams. It is never too late to start afresh. Age is just a number. If you have determination and support of your family, you can achieve anything at any stage of life,” Prabhjot says.Coach Jassi said, “Prabhjot is a perfect example that family responsibilities are never barriers if there is dedication and willingness to work hard. She has shown tremendous discipline and commitment during training. Her eagerness to learn and improve every day has helped her achieve success in a short span. I am confident that if she continues with the same determination, she will win countless medals and inspire women to return to sports and chase their dreams.”Prabhjot’s remarkable comeback — from leaving badminton after marriage to standing atop the podium — is a powerful reminder that dreams can always be revived with determination, family support and dedicated coaching. These are the things that helped her transform an unfinished dream into an inspiring success story that will motivate many women to believe in themselves once again.
