Spurs are planning for a full season under Roberto De Zerbi after surviving relegation on the final day of the Premier League.

But they may have to do so without Argentine star Romero in the backline.

He had been linked with a move to LaLiga with both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid interested in his services.

Reports from Argentine media are now suggesting that he could be set for a stay in the Premier League.

United have been claimed to want to buy the defender in order to bolster their defence before their return to the Champions League.

Should Romero, 28, make the switch to Manchester then he would link-up with Argentina team-mate Lisandro Martinez.

The pair have played together 17 times for the national side and have only finished on the losing side once together.

They were both in the Argentina squad that won the World Cup in Qatar four years ago.

Atletico and Barcelona will provide competition for his signature this summer.

Diego Simeone was desperate to land Romero last summer but could not fund a move.

And he is threatening to enter the market just months after allowing Conor Gallagher to head in the opposite direction to North London.

This was down to silly red cards and a bonkers decision – which he later backtracked on – to miss Spurs’ final-day relegation decider because of a trip to Argentina.

Spurs have already identified their replacement for the defender.

The club are keen to tie up a deal for Brighton star Jan Paul van Hecke after some tough negotiations.

The Dutchman played under De Zerbi while on the South Coast and should be able to quickly adapt.
