Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday called for the swift implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, stressing that there should be no further delay in enforcing the law that grants 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and State Legislative Assemblies.Speaking in Dehradun after inaugurating the Delhi–Dehradun Economic Corridor, Modi said the legislation had received unanimous support from all political parties, reflecting a collective commitment to women’s empowerment. He noted that the reservation should take effect from the 2029 Lok Sabha elections and subsequent Assembly polls, describing it as both a national aspiration and a long-standing demand of Indian women.Outlining the next steps, he announced that a special discussion on the matter has been scheduled in Parliament from April 16. He urged all political parties to unite in consensus to ensure the smooth implementation of the constitutional amendment. “This is the wish of every sister and daughter of this country and we must fulfil it unanimously,” the Prime Minister said.Modi emphasised that a nation’s future is shaped by its roads, highways, expressways, airways, railways and waterways, highlighting the rapid pace of infrastructure development across India. He pointed out that infrastructure investment has risen dramatically in the past decade, noting that while annual spending was less than Rs 2 lakh crore before 2014, it has now increased more than sixfold to over Rs 12 lakh crore per year.Detailing the transformative benefits of the Delhi–Dehradun Economic Corridor, Modi underlined the project’s multi-dimensional impact on the region. He said the expressway would significantly reduce travel time and costs for commuters, leading to substantial fuel savings and lower freight charges. With an investment of ?12,000 crore already channelled into construction, the project has become a major source of employment, providing livelihoods to thousands of engineers, labourers and transport workers. Farmers and animal herders, he added, would also benefit as their produce reaches larger markets more quickly.Highlighting the tourism potential of the new expressway, Modi said that Dehradun, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Mussoorie and the Char Dham circuit would all become more accessible. Uttarakhand, he noted, is increasingly emerging as a premier destination for winter tourism, winter sports and destination weddings.Stressing the government’s commitment to balancing progress with nature and culture, he pointed to the construction of a nearly 12-kilometre elevated wildlife corridor as part of the expressway, designed to ensure that animals, including elephants, face no disruption. He also urged tourists and pilgrims visiting the mountains and forests of Devbhoomi to keep these sacred spaces clean and free of plastic waste. “Our effort is that while infrastructure serves people, the wildlife and natural heritage of these areas must also be protected,” he emphasised.
