Over a month after the Municipal Council election results were announced, the Ferozepur MC is finally set to elect its President and Vice-President following the intervention of the Punjab and Haryana High Court.Voting for the two key posts is scheduled to take place on July 16, bringing an end to the prolonged uncertainty over the formation of the civic body’s leadership. The development comes after Ashok Kumar, along with other Municipal Councillors, filed a civil writ petition before the Punjab and Haryana High Court, seeking directions for conducting the elections. Acting on the petition, the court directed the district administration to convene a meeting of the elected councillors and hold elections for the posts of President and Vice-President.To ensure complete transparency, the court ordered that the entire proceedings be videographed and the recording preserved in the custody of the Deputy Commissioner. The Municipal Council election results were declared on May 29 after polling was held on May 26. The Congress emerged victorious with a clear majority, winning 18 wards, while the BJP secured seven seats, followed by the ruling AAP with five seats. Two Independents were elected, and one seat went to the BSP.Despite enjoying a comfortable majority, the Congress was unable to secure the election of the council chief for more than six weeks, triggering political debate and public speculation. Former MLA (Urban) Parminder Singh Pinki said the people of Ferozepur had delivered a clear mandate in favour of Congress. “Since we have 18 councillors, the BSP councillor is also supporting us, thus having a clear majority. So, we finally approached the High Court to ensure that democracy is not undermined which has directed that the entire process be videographed and the elections will be conducted under the supervision of Senior Advocate Nikhil Goyal,” he said. The delay had become a major talking point in political circles, with residents expressing concern over pending civic issues, including encroachments, traffic congestion, sewerage problems, water supply concerns and the upkeep of public parks. Many believe that the absence of an elected President has slowed decision-making and development works.Political interest in the election has also intensified due to speculation over the likely candidate for the top post. Among the names being discussed are Ashok Kumar, Monty, Rishi Sharma and Reeta Rani, mother of former Municipal Council President Rinku Grover. When contacted, SDM Abhishek Sharma, who has been appointed as the convener for the election process, said that the elections would be conducted in a fair, transparent and peaceful manner.
