For residents of villages cut off by last year’s devastating rains, the newly inaugurated bridge over the Jattvibekoshi river is more than steel and span — it is a return to normalcy. Reinforcing its role as a first responder in Nepal’s times of need, India has helped restore a crucial connectivity link with the inauguration of a 70-metre high-capacity modular bridge at Nepalthok, officials said here on Friday. The bridge was jointly inaugurated by Gitanjali Brandon, Counsellor at the Embassy of India in Kathmandu, and Dr Bijaya Jaishi, Director General of Nepal’s Department of Roads, on April 30. Part of a larger assistance package, the bridge is among 10 such structures being provided by India, along with technical support, on a grant basis to aid Nepal’s post-disaster reconstruction.Valued at over NPR 73 crore, the initiative is aimed at reconnecting communities and reviving local economies in regions hit by the October 2025 rains. For districts like Sindhuli and Ramechhap, where damaged roads had disrupted daily life, trade and access to essential services, the quick assembly of these bridges is expected to make an immediate difference. Officials noted that the restored link would ease the movement of people, goods and emergency services.Nepalese authorities acknowledged the timeliness of India’s assistance, saying such rapid-deployment infrastructure plays a critical role in speeding up recovery after natural disasters. The support builds on earlier efforts. In the aftermath of floods and landslides in 2024, India had supplied 10 pre-fabricated steel bridges worth NPR 41 crore to Nepal, responding promptly to Kathmandu’s request. The latest initiative reflects the enduring India-Nepal partnership — one that goes beyond diplomacy, often finding expression on the ground when communities need it the most.
