A heated exchange broke out between Union Minister JP Nadda and Congress chief Mallikarjun Kharge over the Delhi police’s attempt to detain SFI leader Aishe Ghosh in connection with a 2021 case.On Tuesday, a Delhi police team attempted to take CPM student wing (SFI)’s Delhi secretary and former JNU Students’ Union president Aishe Ghosh into custody from the party’s AKG Bhavan. This led to an altercation between the police and the CPM leaders, after which the police team left the site.In the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday, CPM MP John Brittas criticised the police action and stated that Ghosh’s only offence was participation in a student protest at Jantar Mantar.Kharge, who is the Leader of Opposition in the Upper House, criticised the government for the alleged use of force against students and demanded strict action against those responsible. “I request you to punish people who have gone there unauthorised. Why have they gone? Who are they? Who ordered them?” he asked.Kharge said that it was “very shameful” that the police barged into a national party office.Nadda, who is the Leader of the House, defended the police action and said that the police were trying to maintain law and order. “Any student, who is into activism, will have to face such a situation. When I was a student activist, I was arrested many times from my classroom during the Emergency, when the Congress was in power. Such circumstances are a part of a student activist’s journey,” he said.
