The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) has suspended investigating officer Akash Rai in connection with the alleged custodial death of BSF constable Jaswinder Singh, alias Jattvibeny, from RS Pura, Jammu and Kashmir.“Akash Rai has been placed under suspension till the pendency of the investigation into the custodial torture allegations,” an NCB official said, requesting anonymity. He added that a departmental inquiry has also been initiated. “NCB is a responsible force and we want the probe to be impartial,” he said. The official noted that allegations of spying had also surfaced in the case, but clarified that Jaswinder was arrested in connection with a drug seizure. Jaswinder’s autopsy report, which went viral on Wednesday, revealed 34 injuries, including on his private parts, supporting the family’s allegations of custodial torture. However, the exact cause of death has been withheld pending the chemical examiner’s report from Kharar and histopathology findings from Government Medical College, Amritsar.Jaswinder was picked up by NCB on March 3 near Miran Sahib Chowk while returning to his village Diwangarh, close to the International Border. He was with his mother after getting medicines for her. He was on leave from his posting in Tripura at the time.He was held in connection with an earlier case registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act against his brother, Pupinder Singh. The family said Jaswinder was falsely implicated. A Jammu court discharged him from the case on March 9, a week after his arrest.Jaswinder allegedly died in NCB custody on March 30. His family — mother Gurmeet Kaur, brother Pupinder Singh, and wife Lovejeet Kaur — has been demanding justice. On Thursday, they met District and Sessions Judge Jatinder Kaur, seeking expeditious inquest proceedings and registration of an FIR against the NCB officials involved.
