The new BYD Dolphin G supermini is set to hit the UK market this summer

The new BYD Dolphin G supermini is expected to make waves when it becomes available in the UK this summer.

According to an Auto Express report, the car is set to cost around £23,000, which will make it the cheapest plug-in hybrid available in the UK market.

The Dolphin G is expected to rival the likes of the Renault Clio, Volkswagen Polo and Toyota Yaris, as the Chinese company hopes to make a mark on the B-segment of the car market.

The car is powered by BYD’s Super Hybrid system, as used by the recently launched Atto 2 DM-i crossover, and features a 128bhp 1.5-litre petrol engine and two electric motors: a 161bhp drive unit and a generator.

The overall power output and the size of the battery will depend on the specification of the Dolphin G, however.

The entry-level models will feature a 7.42kWh battery that will be good for up to 25 miles of pure electric driving, according to BYD.

The Boost, Comfort and Sport versions of the car will offer a larger 18.3kWh powerpack that is expected to deliver a 65 mile EV range.

Fully recharging either battery should take a little under three hours from a typical 7kW home wallbox.

BYD has claimed the new release will be ideal for customers who want a compact car that offers zero emissions but also has the flexibility of long-distance driving.

The brand has also claimed the car has a combined range of up to 646 miles from a full tank of petrol and a fully charged battery, making it versatile for many motorists.
