Former Punjab and Haryana High Court Judge Justice (Retd.) Ranjit Singh has said that he is not afraid of any notice sent by Dr. Gurpreet Kaur, wife of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, regarding allegations that she demanded Rs 5 crore to suppress a rape case.While addressing a press conference on Monday, Justice (Retd.) Ranjit Singh said that instead of replying to the notice, he would contest the case in court and reveal all the facts related to the matter. He said this would not only expose those concerned but also reveal the involvement of several other policemen in the case.He said he would continue to raise his voice for victims of human rights violations.Justice (Retd.) Ranjit Singh also denied filing any complaint before the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) seeking an inquiry into the allegation that Dr. Gurpreet Kaur, wife of the Punjab Chief Minister, had demanded Rs 5 crore to suppress a rape case.The statements by Justice (Retd.) Ranjit Singh came after the NHRC issued notices to the Punjab Chief Secretary and the Director General of Police (DGP), directing them to inquire into the allegations and submit an Action Taken Report (ATR) within two weeks, based on a complaint reportedly stemming from his comments.In its order, the NHRC said it had taken cognizance of allegations that the wife of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had allegedly demanded Rs 5 crore to suppress a rape case. The Commission directed the Punjab Chief Secretary and the DGP to inquire into the allegations and submit an ATR within two weeks.Pursuant to the NHRC’s action, Kaur sent a legal notice to Justice (Retd.) Ranjit Singh, asking him to tender an apology within 24 hours of receiving the notice. The notice stated that if he failed to respond within the stipulated 24-hour deadline, he would face legal proceedings and be required to appear before a court of law.Malvinder Singh Mali and Pyare Lal Garg of the Punjab Human Rights Organisation (PHRO) were also present on the occasion.
