Taking forward his campaign against drug abuse through sports and fitness, renowned orthopaedic surgeon, philanthropist and Chairman of Udaan Trust, Dr Avtar Singh, has inaugurated a village gym at Khairdinke near here.This is second such facility established under by Dr Avtar Singh under his ambitious ‘Mission 51’ initiative. He aims to set up 51 gyms across Punjab villages within a year to promote a drug-free society.The gym was launched in collaboration with the Khairdinke gram panchayat and sarpanch Kashmir Singh. The initiative follows the successful opening of first village gym at Bohru and is part of a wider effort to provide rural youth with healthy recreational opportunities.Addressing villagers and youth during the inauguration, Dr Singh said the project is about creating positive alternatives to substance abuse. “We are not just building gyms. We are starting a ‘Gym da langar, free fitness for every rural youth. Bohru was step one, Khairdinke is step two and our target is 51 gyms in 12 months,” he said.Dr Singh, who has spent over 35 years serving communities through healthcare and social initiatives, said prevention is as important as treatment in the fight against drugs. His previous initiatives include the Amandeep HOPE Project, which has provided free healthcare services to over 54,000 patients in 852 villages, along with programmes such as Smile Train, free OPD services at Durgiana Mandir, Jai Ho Mohalla Clinic, Aman Ki Asha, and support for village sports academies.
