And as England brace for their biggest game in years in conditions that no one believes are favourable – there is still a sense of resolution, and of hope.
The Three Lions are set to travel to Mexico City to fight for a coveted quarter final spot, heading 2,700 feet above sea level to the infamous Azteca.
But in the face of adversity, Paddy Power have decided there’s one man prepared to take them all the way to “the promised land of losing heavily to France“.
And even if, as they said, the Irish do not back the cause, Harry Kane provides an “unalienable right foot” and a “monster forehead” to give the nation a glimpse at history.

In a July 4 stunt to mark America’s 250th Independence Day, a traditional town crier read out the declaration beneath the statue of George Washington in Trafalgar Square.
Former England international Tim Sherwood, the man who gave Kane his first Premier League start, then ceremonially signed the document.
Speaking exclusively to JattvibeSport, Sherwood said: “I’m so proud, not just of Harry but of all the boys I brought through there. I treat them as my own.
“I’m a man with four girls and none of them played football, so when I used to go in every day those boys were like my sons really.

“Harry has just gone on leaps and bounds. It is really hard to imagine that he would be this good.
“But the bigger the stage, the more he stands up.”
Sherwood believes Kane’s mentality is what has carried him from Tottenham hopeful to England talisman.
He added: “No one can ever knock him down because he just keeps getting back up.
“The loans he had were not necessarily the most successful. Some were, but not necessarily in the first instance.
“He had to work his way through it, especially at Millwall when he was coming under a bit of stick.
“Even now, Harry will feel like he has not reached his ceiling. He will still feel he has got levels to go and that is a fantastic trait for anyone to have.”
Sherwood also reckons Kane has already overtaken Alan Shearer in an England shirt.

The 56-year-old played alongside Shearer during Blackburn’s title-winning years and knows better than most what made the Newcastle legend so special.
But he said: “I think Harry has to be England’s greatest striker. If England go on to win the World Cup then it will be unquestionable.
“The numbers he is churning out, his leadership qualities and his all-round game mean he has to be in the argument.
“He has never let England down and I would be banging the drum for him to be the greatest.
“I played with one of the greatest ever and that man is Alan Shearer.
“But in an England shirt, Harry has surpassed Alan.”
And Sherwood did not stop there, claiming Kane is now the best striker on the planet.
He said: “For an out-and-out goalscorer, you have to put Harry and Erling Haaland in the equation.

“Haaland is a phenomenal player and a ridiculous goalscorer at Champions League level and in the Premier League.
“But Harry has gone over to the Bundesliga and ripped it apart. He is right up there.
“Some players are different. Mbappe plays off the left, he is not an out-and-out No 9.
“I think we are seeing the end of Lewandowski now, so we have to take him out of the equation. Harry has surpassed him.
“For me, he is the greatest striker in the world at the moment.”
Sherwood, who was in London to sign Paddy Power’s spoof declaration, believes England’s World Cup dream depends on Kane staying fit and firing.
He said: “Without Harry Kane there is no World Cup trophy. With Harry Kane, you have every chance.
“But I’m not just a biased old coach of his. I’m someone with football knowledge.
“And I think anyone out there with football knowledge would realise that Harry Kane is a necessity for this England team to be successful.”
Sherwood added that he believes England will progress – even if it takes extra time.
He said: “Not always the best teams win these tournaments. It is the team with the best moments.
“I believe England will win the game 2-1.”
“Harry Kane is the most reliable player who has ever put on an England shirt, I believe.
“Guaranteed performances, guaranteed goals and 100 per cent effort.
“He is an England legend and I think he is still writing his script. This is not over.”
PaddyPower’s Declaration of Kane-dependence reads: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that not all England players are created equal.
“That only one was endowed with the ability to leather it into the top – corner with the dread hour of the squeaky-bum upon us.
“That he alone is endowed with a certain unalienable right foot, but also a monster forehead for nutting it in.
“That whether those to the left and right of him produce nought but step-overs and under-hit crosses, he will overcome great resistance, whether that be Aaron Wan-Bissaka or the Panamanian lad who plays for Norwich.
“And whether the gaffer may be a shouty German or a man in a gilet called Tim, it shall matter not.
“For he shall say to himself ‘bugger it’ and just get the job done when everyone else is having a drink they don’t need while pretending to not watch yonder cheerleaders.
“Such is the patient sufferance of the man who bears the armband and carries upon his back the hope of a clammy nation, though we beg of him to turn no more to the stuttering penalty.
“For it is bad and wrong and well easy to save.
“And we do mutually pledge to each other our lives, our fortunes, and our sacred honour in praise of his service and swear to no longer laugh at his Spursiness.
“For he alone shall lead us through the fiery trials of the impenetrable Azteca to the promised land of losing heavily to France.
“And it is through his toil, our Chingford King, that we may be free’d from celebrity fans, breaks in which hydration is taken and all else that is ‘soccer’.
“So say us all. Apart from the Irish.”
A Paddy Power spokesperson said: “Every tournament England convince themselves they’ve finally stopped relying on Harry Kane.
“Then Harry Kane inevitably bails them out. We simply thought it was time someone made it official.”
