A viral video of a paraglider making an emergency landing on the Kullu-Manali national highway at Katrain has again raised serious safety concerns about adventure sports in Kullu. The paraglider had taken off from the Dobhi site but was forced to land on the road due to strong winds. The date of the incident could not be ascertained.Fortunately, the pilot and passenger escaped unharmed, but the incident highlights the persistent dangers of operating in adverse weather. This is not an isolated case. Reports reveal a troubling pattern of similar crashes in the Kullu region, many resulting in severe injuries or deaths, often linked to operator negligence and weather violations. In January 2025, a 31-year-old tourist from Hyderabad was killed at Raison after a sudden gust of wind crashed his glider. In February 2024, a tourist from Telangana died after falling mid-air at Dobhi. The operator allegedly failed to secure her harness properly. In another incident, a gust of wind slammed a tandem paraglider into a tree at Dhalpur, requiring a fire brigade rescue. A tourist also fell 80 ft at the Garsa site in December 2025 due to an equipment failure. These repeated incidents have forced Kullu authorities to suspend operations at several sites over repeated safety violations. The alarming frequency of crashes points to systemic failures in regulating adventure sports. A severe manpower shortage in Tourism Department has led to inadequate monitoring, with many pilots operating without mandatory licenses or using substandard equipment.Experts and officials have repeatedly called for robust safety protocols and a permanent regulatory framework. The emergency landing at Katrain is the latest reminder that as adventure tourism grows, strict safety measures are no longer optional but critical to protecting lives and preserving the region’s reputation as a safe destination for thrill-seekers.
