PGA TOUR chiefs have announced a major restructure – with promotion and relegation set to be introduced.

From 2028, the sport’s best players will compete in the newly former PGA Tour Championship Series.

The new series will include 15, 120-player events between February and August each year.

No tournament will be mandatory – although players that don’t play will NOT be replaced by alternates or wildcards.

The new tournaments will draw from the $20 million (£15m) purses currently used for Signature Events.

Top players will now go up against each other in the 15 new Championships Series events – as well as the majors and Players Championship.

Responding to the landmark news, Tiger Woods wrote on X: “This is an exciting moment for the game of golf.

“It has been a privilege to lead the Future Competition Committee and I am proud of the work we have done to build the best version of the PGA Tour for future generations of players and fans.”

Woods’ ally and six-time major champion Rory McIlroy added: “Today’s announcement is a positive step for professional golf.

“As more details emerge, it is encouraging to see the PGA Tour reaffirming the importance of meritocracy and creating a structure that will serve both players and fans well into the future.”

Below the PGA Tour Championship Series will be the PGA Tour Challenger Series.

Each event across both series will utilise a points system.

The 20 players that earn the most points in a PGA Tour Challenger Series season will earn promotion.

Those that finish in the bottom 30 of the Championship Series will then be forced to take part in “last chance” events in the autumn in a bid to retain their top-tier status.

Brian Rolapp, PGA Tour CEO, told fans in an open letter: “Today marks a pivotal moment for the PGA Tour as we move forward with a new competitive system, starting in the 2028 season.

“Throughout this process, we have listened closely to players, partners and our fans. You told us you wanted to see the best players in the world competing against one another more often.

“”You wanted clearer stakes as the season unfolds. And you wanted a more dramatic finish to the season that rewards excellence and makes every tournament matter.

“This new model is our response.”
