A Pittsburgh pediatric doctor was killed and his wife was wounded when they were brutally stabbed while they slept in their bed, police said Thursday.Police responded to a home in Edgewood on Thursday shortly after midnight and found Idris Evans, 46, and his wife with “multiple stab wounds,” Allegheny County police said. Evans, a pediatric critical care physician at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, was taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead, police said.His wife was also taken to a hospital and remains in critical condition.During a search, detectives found Elijah Hemingway, 32, behind a nearby home, with “lacerations to his hand,” police said. He was detained and taken to an area hospital for treatment.Court records show Hemingway is awaiting a preliminary hearing on charges of criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, criminal trespass and possessing instruments of crime.At the hospital, Evans’ wife told authorities that she and her husband awoke to a man stabbing them with a kitchen knife. She described the man as “psychotic,” saying he repeatedly “made utterances about ‘God’ and being ‘God,’” according to the criminal complaint. She also described the man as being in his underwear.Allegheny County Assistant Police Superintendent Victor Joseph said at a news conference Thursday that police are investigating whether Evans and Hemingway might have known each other. “The wife believes she heard her husband say a name, Elijah, but the wife is also unclear if the actor identified himself by name, so we’re still investigating that,” Joseph said.Evans’ wife indicated she did not know the suspect herself, the complaint says.She said that the man also used other objects in their bedroom as weapons and that she and her husband fought back as best they could. She successfully yelled for her children, ages 8 and 12, to flee and go to their neighbor’s house, according to the complaint. The children were uninjured, police said.Evans’ wife said that the man demanded her car keys and that she gave them to him, the filing said. Evans’ wife, who was stabbed multiple times, ran to a neighbor’s house for help and to call 911, according to the complaint. When police arrived at the couple’s home, they found Evans on the floor of the third-story bedroom, with “multiple severe stab wounds and lacerations to his trunk,” the complaint says. There was a large amount of what was believed to be blood on the floor and walls of the bedroom, which was in disarray, with items knocked over. In the third-story bathroom, police found a large kitchen knife, also with suspected blood on it, the complaint says. The back door of the home was found open with blood on the handle. Officers also noticed an open kitchen window with suspected blood at its base and a “Leatherman style multi-tool nearby,” the filing says. When police arrived at the couple’s home, they found Dr. Idris Evans on the floor of the couple’s third-story bedroom, with “multiple severe stab wounds and lacerations to his trunk.” WPXIIn an interview with police, Hemingway said Evans had invited him to the residence hours before and let him inside when he arrived on his bike, the complaint says. However, no bike was found at the property, it says. Hemingway claimed that Evans attacked him with a knife and that a physical altercation ensued between himself and both victims in the third-floor bedroom, according to the complaint. Hemingway said that during the struggle, he was stabbed in the back, it says. He did not have any visible injuries beyond those to his hands, the complaint says. He remains in the hospital. It was not immediately clear whether he has an attorney. Joseph said that Hemingway does not live in the Edgewood area and that he did not immediately have information about whether Hemingway had a criminal history. The investigation continues. Evans’ death has shaken the local medical community. In addition to working as a physician, Evans was an assistant professor of critical care medicine at the University of Pittsburgh. The school and the hospital are “deeply saddened by the tragic loss of Dr. Idris Evans,” a hospital spokesperson said in a statement. “Dr. Evans was a dedicated caregiver and valued member of our hospital and university communities. Our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, and colleagues during this difficult time. We ask that their privacy be respected,” the statement said.
