Police recovered 1 kg and 20 grams of heroin from an abandoned car during a checkpoint here on Friday. However, after spotting the police team, the alleged drug smuggler abandoned the vehicle and fled the scene. Along with the contraband, police also seized an iPhone and an electronic weighing scale from the car.According to police, a routine checkpoint had been set up when officers signalled a suspicious car to stop. On seeing the police ahead, the driver allegedly panicked, brought the vehicle to a halt a short distance away, and escaped into the nearby area.A search of the abandoned vehicle led to the recovery of the commercial quantity of heroin, an electronic weighing scale allegedly used for weighing the narcotics and an iPhone.Based on documents recovered from the vehicle and information obtained from the phone, police identified one of the accused as Karan Sharma.A case has been registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and a manhunt has been launched to trace and arrest the accused.
