A PREMIER LEAGUE winner has made his exit from an EFL club just weeks after guiding them to survival in their league.

Christian Fuchs, 40, took over at Welsh outfit Newport County last November, his first time working as a head coach.

But now, after guiding the side out of a relegation scrap, the former Leicester City defender has moved on.

The club released a statement that read: “Everyone at Newport County would like to thank Christian for his hard work, commitment and professionalism during his time at the club.

“The club wishes Christian every success and happiness for the future.”

When Fuchs signed his contract with Newport, the side were sat at the bottom of League Two on just 11 points from 16 matches, and had recently sacked previous boss David Hughes.

It was not the smoothest of starts as Fuchs picked up just two points from his opening five games, leaving him a point further adrift from safety than he was when he started.

His side were still rock bottom of the table as late as early March, battling it out with the likes of Harrogate Town and Barrow.

But a solid run in the final weeks of the season saw them tentatively climb out of the relegation spots, clinching their survival on the final day with a win over Barrow to finish 20th.

While it was Fuchs’ first job in charge of a club of his own, he is not a star that lacks for experience.

The ex-left-back won the Premier League with Leicester in their iconic 2015/16 miracle, in which he made 32 appearances.

He also enjoyed club spells with Schalke in the Bundesliga and Charlotte FC in the MLS.

And in international competition, he added 78 caps for Austria across a decade with the side.

But with the reason for his exit not yet known, the future could be open for a new chapter for the veteran figure.
