On Monday, it was reported Colclough cried as he was told his 28-month prison sentence for GBH was to be suspended for two years.

The 31-year-old was at The Red Lion pub in Brimington with his partner and another couple when he attacked the man, reports DerbyshireLive.

Derby Crown Court heard how the victim had just recovered from a fracturered back when the assault took place.

He is said to have been struck with “considerable force” and suffered “two extremely nasty wounds to his face”.

In a heartbreaking victim statement read to the court, it was heard how the victim’s son was “too scared” to look at him for “two weeks” due to his horrific injuries.

“I was the victim of a selfish attack by someone with an inflated ego due to his position as a professional footballer,” he said.

He added that the attack had “ruined my faith in people”.”

Colclough, who had not consumed alcohol before the attack, denied the charge brought against him but was found guilty by a jury.

Sentencing the footballer, Judge Jonathan Straw said: “I hope you now realise that on that night your behaviour in the toilets of the pub was violent, grotesque, uncalled for and unnecessary?

“You have an extremely short fuse and I hope you realise now that behaving in this way can have serious consequences?”

She added that after reflecting on the evidence, he would no longer be held in custody as Colclough was sentenced over video-link from HMP Nottingham.

But in addition to his suspended sentence, he was also ordered to pay the victim £1,000 in compensation.

Colclough, born in Stoke-on-Trent, came through the ranks of Crewe Alexander and was promoted to the first team in 2012.

After making 60 appearances, he moved to Wigan Athletic four years later before joining Milton Keynes Dons on loan.

In 2018, he signed for Scunthorpe United before joining Altrincham in November 2020 and Chesterfield in 2023.

The winger made 89 appearances for the National League side, scoring 17 goals.
