Senior Congress leader and Punjab in-charge Bhupesh Baghel on Wednesday submitted his report on the ongoing infighting in the Punjab unit to AICC general secretary (organisation) KC Venugopal, saying any decision on the party’s leadership would be taken after careful consideration and not in a haste. The development was followed by intense political activity in Chandigarh. Hours after the report was submitted, former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, who along with several other senior party leaders has been strongly opposing the retention of Amrinder Singh Raja Warring as the Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief, reached the Sector 8 residence of the Leader of Opposition (LoP) Partap Singh Bajwa. The meeting has fuelled intense speculation that the party high command is actively intervening to pacify the disgruntled faction. Incidentally, Bajwa, who has been positioning himself as a bridge between the disgruntled leaders and the high command, had met Venugopal in New Delhi earlier this morning. While both Bajwa and Channi downplayed the evening meeting as a routine courtesy call, party sources did not rule Bajwa returning from the national capital with a specific message for the Channi group.Channi’s immediate arrival at Bajwa’s residence upon the latter’s return to Chandigarh points to a coordinated effort to break the over two-week-long deadlock. So far, the disgruntled leaders have dug in their heels on changing Warring and offering a consensus candidate in the eventuality of the Ludhiana MP stepping down as the state unit chief. The leaders engaging the state leaders want to ensure that any potential successor has the backing of all key factions to prevent further fragmentation within the state unit. After the Bajwa-Channi meeting, all leaders opposed to Warring met at the residence of Kapurthala MLA Rana Gurjeet Singh to discuss the way forward.Amid speculation over a possible leadership change, Baghel said Punjab Congress chief Amrinder Singh Raja Warring had not resigned. He also said that changing a party president was not a matter to be treated lightly, indicating that the high command would take a considered decision after assessing the feedback.Former minister Raj Kumar Verka, who also met the Congress leadership, dismissed speculation over the meetings, saying interactions with the high command were a regular organisational exercise, particularly with the 2027 Punjab Assembly elections approaching. He said any leader with concerns was free to place them before the high command, whose doors remained open to everyone. “Whatever decision is taken by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi and KC Venugopal would be accepted by all party leaders,” Verka said.On July 11, Baghel had met the disgruntled party leaders in Chandigarh, wherein several senior leaders openly questioned Warring’s leadership.During the consultations, many of the 92 leaders who met Baghel, including sitting MLAs and former legislators, reportedly told him that while they had no personal differences with Warring, they were not convinced he could lead the Congress to victory in the 2027 Assembly elections.Among those who attended the consultations were former Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi, Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa, Rana Gurjeet Singh, Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa, Sangat Singh Gilzian, Aruna Chaudhary, OP Soni, Pargat Singh, Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa and Bharat Bhushan Ashu.
