Punjab Congress president and Ludhiana MP Amarinder Singh Raja Warring has served a legal notice on former Director General of Police (DGP) Mohammad Mustafa, accusing him of making false, defamatory, derogatory and malicious statements against him during a recent interview with a private channel.Mustafa is the husband of former cabinet minister Razia Sultana and father of Malerkotla district president Nishant Akhtar. Mustafa, who has been critical of the functioning of Warring, has in recent months publicly urged the Congress high command to revisit its decision to retain Warring as the state unit chief, citing concerns over leadership and organisational issues within the party. The PPCC chief confirmed that he had served legal notice on Mustafa.Replying to the legal notice, Mustafa wrote on his X handle that he stood by what he had said that Warring lacked qualities of a leader.Through the legal notice, Warring demanded that Mustafa immediately withdraw the impugned statements, tender an unconditional public apology, and cease further dissemination of the remarks. It also calls upon him to ensure the apology and withdrawal receive appropriate prominence on the same media platform and related digital channels, take steps to remove circulating clips or posts, and furnish a written undertaking of compliance within 48 hours of receipt of the notice, failing which legal proceedings may be initiated.According to the notice, Mustafa, while discussing Warring’s leadership during the interview that was broadcast and widely circulated on electronic and social media, “consciously and deliberately” made highly derogatory personal statements concerning the MP’s intelligence, competence, judgment and ability to discharge leadership responsibilities. The notice asserts that these remarks were not confined to criticism of any political decision or policy but amounted to a personal attack intended to lower Warring’s reputation and standing in the estimation of the public.Warring, who represents Ludhiana in the Lok Sabha and serves as president of the Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee, has been described in the notice as a public figure who has remained actively engaged in political and organisational responsibilities for several years and has earned considerable goodwill among the people of Punjab.
