The Amritsar police on Thursday arrested Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh from Dibrugarh Jail in connection with the Ajnala police station violence case following the expiry of his detention under the National Security Act (NSA).He was produced before the Ajnala Sub-Divisional Court via video-conferencing from Dibrugarh after the arrest. The police sought a 15-day remand for further investigation into the case. However, after hearing arguments from both sides, the court granted only two-day police custody. During this period, Amritpal will remain lodged at the Dibrugarh police station. After the state government cited security and law and order concerns in case of his production in Amritsar, the Punjab and Haryana High Court had recently permitted the state to keep him lodged in the Dibrugarh Jail even after the expiry of his NSA detention and following his arrest in the Ajnala case.It also allowed all proceedings, including police and judicial remand, to be conducted virtually from Dibrugarh. On Thursday, defence counsel Harpal Singh Khara and Rituraj Singh submitted that the police sought remand for interrogation regarding alleged recovery of weapons and vehicles, including the van, which “carried” the palki (palanquin) of Guru Granth Sahib, apart from probing the conspiracy angle and the alleged formation of the Anandpur Khalsa Force during Amritpal’s tenure as chief of the Waris Punjab De organisation. The defence argued that the case, already under trial before an Ajnala court, was currently at the evidence stage. The defence further contended that the police had not referred to the van during the past three years of investigation or trial.“After considering the submissions, the court granted only a two-day police remand. The matter will now be heard on Saturday,” they said.Amritpal has been lodged in Dibrugarh Central Jail since April 23, 2023, after being detained under the NSA, nearly two months after the Ajnala police station clash. Around 41 persons have been named in the FIR in the case.Several of his associates, including Papalpreet Singh, Daljeet Singh Kalsi, Kulwant Singh, Varinder Johal, Gurmeet Singh Bhukhanwala, his uncle Harjit Singh, Basant Singh, Gurinder Singh Aujla and Bhagwant Singh, were also detained under the NSA earlier. They were shifted to Punjab last year and are currently facing trial in the Ajnala court. The clash had occurred on February 23, 2023, when Amritpal and his supporters stormed the Ajnala police station to protest the arrest of Lovepreet Singh, alias Toofan. Protesters broke barricades, clashed with the police and injured several personnel, including then SP Jugraj Singh. During the incident, they carried the Guru Granth Sahib in a palanquin, prompting the police to exercise restraint and triggering widespread condemnation. The protest stemmed from an FIR accusing Amritpal and his aides of kidnapping and assaulting a man from Ropar district. The mob laid siege to the police station, forcing the release of Lovepreet. An FIR was registered the next day, and after a manhunt, Amritpal was arrested from Moga and booked under the NSA before being shifted to Dibrugarh.
