A day after passengers reported several non-functional facilities at the newly refurbished Jalandhar Cantt railway station, the Railways has said that the inconvenience was caused by the restoration work following the inauguration by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during which temporary infrastructure had been installed on the premises.Sanjeev Kumar, Divisional Railway Manager, Ferozepur division, said the inaugural event, which concluded around 7.30 pm on Friday, was attended by around 5,000 people. To facilitate the programme, the event management agency had installed digisets, LED screens, temporary wiring, benches and other infrastructure.“Escalators and lifts were kept closed to prevent damage while carrying out these arrangements,” Kumar said.He said the cleaning and restoration work began immediately after the event. “Our officials visited the station on Saturday evening, and most facilities had been restored by then. Teams are visiting the station again on Jattvibeday to ensure the remaining work is completed,” he added.Explaining why the air-conditioned waiting hall on the ground floor remained closed, Kumar said it had been temporarily occupied by the police personnel deployed for the Prime Minister’s visit. The hall was kept shut to restore the attached toilets before reopening it for passengers. On the functioning of the passenger amenities, the DRM clarified that while the contractor is responsible for lifts, escalators and other equipment during the defect liability period, their day-to-day operation is being managed by the Railways. He added that the redeveloped station has several new passenger amenities compared to the old facility and that additional manpower would be deployed in due course to manage them. The clarification came a day after passengers complained that facilities, including waiting halls, escalators and other passenger amenities, were unavailable despite the station being inaugurated under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme.
