A majority of faculty members of Rajiv Gandhi National University of Law (RGNUL), Punjab, have threatened a pen-down strike, alleging “lack of transparency” in administrative matters and seeking the intervention of Chancellor Justice Ashwani Kumar Mishra.In a letter sent to Vice-Chancellor Jai S Singh and the university authorities on August 10, the faculty members objected to a recent promotion decision and raised concerns over several other issues.They alleged that despite repeatedly seeking changes, their concerns remained unaddressed. “Even the issue of a recent proposal of out-of-turn promotion of certain faculty members was raised but no action was taken,” they said, adding that proceedings of promotions and interviews were not videographed and committees were constituted without the approval of senior faculty members concerned.The faculty members have issued a 48-hour ultimatum to the university authorities and sought a personal hearing with the Chancellor or his authorised representative. They warned that they may withdraw from routine institutional work and proceed with a pen-down strike if timely intervention is not provided.The agitating faculty members alleged selective favouritism, claiming that one faculty member was promoted to Associate Professor despite receiving a promotion only a year earlier, while several eligible candidates awaiting promotion since 2022 were allegedly overlooked without adequate justification.They also alleged that “academic standards of quality and research have been extremely diluted” due to unnecessary intervention. Faculty members claimed they were being forced to compromise on syllabus quality, provide handwritten notes and award passing marks to students.Questioning the university’s expenditure priorities, they alleged that lakhs of government funds were spent on conferences of “questionable relevance” and foreign trips without tangible benefits. They also claimed employees of other institutions were involved in RGNUL’s internal administration and decision-making, allegedly contrary to rules.Efforts to contact Prof Singh for his response remained unsuccessful. He did not answer calls or respond to messages seeking his version. His official reaction is awaited.
