A RED weather warning for “extreme heat” has been issued in the Canary Islands – as Gran Canaria is set to see temperatures reach 40C.
It comes amid a series of record-breaking heatwaves across several other European holiday hotspots which have sparked wildfires and evacuations.

Gran Canaria is expected to see temperatures reach 40C as strong gusts of up to 80km per hour are also set to batter the tourist island.

The rest of the Canary Islands are expected to remain under yellow heat warnings, with parts of Tenerife placed on orange alert.
On Tuesday, the red warning will be downgraded to orange, although temperatures could still reach 39C.
Isolated areas in the Gran Canaria’s southeast may go past 40C.
In Tenerife, temperatures are forecast to reach 37C with the orange alert expected to remain in place by Tuesday.
Lanzarote remains on a yellow heat warning as powerful winds of up to 70km per hour are expected to affect areas in the southeast.
