Members of the Sanjha Morcha, who have been staging a protest for the past four years demanding permanent closure of the ethanol plant at Mansoorwala village, alleged that they were placed under house arrest during the visit of Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to Zira.Sanjha Morcha member Roman Brar said they had submitted a letter to the Zira SDM, inviting the CM to visit the protest site during the ‘Shukrana Yatra’, and give a written assurance regarding closure of the ethanol plant. He said the protesters had even arranged a chair and made arrangements for the Mann at the dharna site.Roman alleged that instead of visiting the protest site, police confined Sanjha Morcha members to prevent them from meeting him. “The CM should visit Baba Duni Chand Gurdwara Sahib in the village, and give a written commitment for permanent closure of the plant”, said Brar.He also claimed that the power department had issued an electricity bill of around Rs 70,000 to a farmer for power consumed during the protest, which should be waived off.The Morcha further demanded a penalty of Rs 100 crore against the factory for allegedly polluting underground water.
