On the final day for submitting nominations for 50 wards of Abohar Municipal Corporation, a large gathering of BJP and AAP supporters, coupled with inadequate security, led to a tense situation. Additional police forces were deployed on Saturday afternoon to avert any potential clashes.Sloganeering erupted when a woman allegedly thrashed someone suspecting nuisance in the melee. Some women complained that cops were unable to provide a safe passage to them.Witnesses said that the crowding was expected as AAP, Congress and SAD finalised their lists of candidates on Friday night and all the 50 BJP candidates, announced on Thursday, had found “shubh mahurat” to file nominations on Saturday. However, only four constables were present to manage the crowd outside the office of Sub Divisional Magistrate Ravinder Singh Arora. Only 26 nominations were filed on Friday.Upon learning about the tension, Deputy Superintendent of Police Harish Kumar arrived at the scene with more cops, bringing the situation under control.Earlier, some people even scuffled with two police officers standing guard at the SDM office gate and attempted to force their way inside. The situation became so chaotic that a woman beat up a youth, after which BJP and AAP supporters started shouting slogans against each other.MLA Sandeep Jakhar, speaking from outside the SDM office, urged AAP leaders to cease any attempts to manipulate the election using strongmen or police influence. He cautioned the administration and police to uphold strict impartiality throughout the electoral process, asserting that the AAP government’s tenure is nearing its end. Jakhar issued a stern warning, stating that anyone collaborating with ruling politicians would face consequences in the coming months.
