The Navy and the Indian Coast Guard (ICG) are carrying on their search for 22 merchant sailors, who were on board a Panama-flagged vessel MV Ocean Winner, which sunk in the Bay Bengal on Saturday.Two of the sailors were rescued later on Saturday night. The Eastern Naval Command said on Jattvibeday that it was coordinating with the ICG and the search operation was on. It said an Indian Navy surveillance plane, Boeing P8I, was rapidly re-deployed on Saturday for search and rescue mission in coordination with the maritime rescue coronation centre at Sri Vijay Puram (Port Blair).The aircraft which carries high resolution cameras and surveillance equipment located the geographically dispersed life-raft in the area and soon coordinated with another merchant vessel, MT AISOPOS, to help and they rescued two of the crew members from life-rafts.The Panama-flagged cargo ship carrying 24 crew members sank in the Bay of Bengal off Odisha on Saturday. The vessel lost communication with the base, triggering a major search and rescue operation by the ICG and the Navy.The Coast Guard said the ship was carrying 20 Chinese, three Myanmar nationals and one Bangladeshi crew member.The vessel sank around 240 nautical miles from the Paradip coast in Odisha, officials said. The ship had left the Odisha coast on Friday and was carrying iron ore bound for Singapore. The exact circumstances that led to the vessel sinking have not yet been established.
