Akal Takht Jathedar Giani Kuldip Singh Gargaj and Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) president Harjinder Singh Dhami on Friday condemned the Haryana Police lathicharge and use of tear gas against Sikh devotees during a peaceful protest in Ambala on Thursday night, calling the action unjust and unfortunate.Jathedar Gargaj said it was contradictory for the Haryana government to hold talks with the Sikh community while using force against protesters. He said Haryana Gurdwara Management Committee president Jagdish Singh Jhinda, several members and employees, Sikh devotees and police personnel were injured.Gargaj spoke to Jhinda over the phone to enquire about the injured and the situation. Jhinda told him that the police action was inappropriate while talks with the government were underway.The Jathedar said the issue could have been resolved through dialogue and called for an inquiry into the circumstances leading to the use of force. He also urged authorities to investigate whether miscreants had infiltrated the protest to provoke the police and discredit the agitation.Gargaj said the situation could have been avoided had the Haryana government taken timely legal action against those accused of injuring Sikh devotees at Gurdwara Panjokhra Sahib during the Prakash Gurpurab of Sri Guru Harkrishan Sahib.Dhami also condemned the police action, saying the use of force against people raising demands democratically was unacceptable. He urged the Haryana Government to arrest those responsible for allegedly running a vehicle into devotees at Gurdwara Panjokhra Sahib and release the arrested Sikh youth.
