Separatist leader Shabir Ahmed Shah was arrested by the National Investigation Agency (NIA) in connection with a three-decade-old terror case and remanded to 10-day custody by a special court on Saturday, officials said. The 72-year-old had been granted bail by the Supreme Court on March 12 in a terror funding case and by a Delhi court on March 28 in a money laundering case.He was arrested by the Srinagar branch of the NIA on Friday in connection with a 1996 case involving an attack on policemen during the funeral of a terrorist. He was produced before the Patiala House Court, which granted a three-day transit remand.Shah, who was recently released on bail after nearly seven years in jail in other cases, was later produced before a special NIA court in Jammu, where the agency sought his custodial interrogation. After hearing submissions, the court sent him to 10-day NIA custody, allowing investigators to question him in the 1996 case. The case pertains to an FIR lodged at Shergarhi Police Station in Srinagar on July 17, 1996. According to the FIR, during the funeral of a terrorist, sloganeering took place and some terrorists opened fire, injuring security personnel.Kashmir’s chief cleric Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, in a post on X, said: “Even after spending a lifetime of 39 years in jail for his political beliefs, Shabir Shah, now old and critically ill, is once again being persecuted despite the bail granted to him by the Supreme Court. This is very unfortunate and worrying.”He added, “This revolving-door policy completely undermines the justice system, where one case replaces another to ensure continued incarceration. We appeal to the Centre once again not to prolong the suffering of Shah and his family and to let him be set free.”
