But you can get a lot more banger for your buck with these sizzling ideas. . . .
BANGER BARGAINS: Snap them up when you see a good deal. Look for sausages with yellow stickers on them or bulk-buy deals.
At the moment many stores have offers to help you prepare for barbecues in the decent weather, so it’s a good time to stock up.Split the sausages into meal-sized portions and freeze immediately.
FEWER ON A SKEWER: If you are planning to fire up the barbecue soon, make sausages go further by making meaty kebabs.
Slice them diagonally into thick coins and thread them on skewers, alternating with chunks of your choice of onion, pepper or mushroom. You should be able to get two good-size kebabs from a sausage.
HOT DOG HEAVEN: Got guests coming over this summer? Keep them happy with some loaded hotdogs.
Fry up a pile of onions, make a cheap cabbage-and-carrot coleslaw, grate some cheese and pile the lot in a hot dog bun with a sausage.
The delicious toppings will make each handful feel like a meal in itself — and it won’t cost you much to make, either.
TAKE THE PULSE: Away from the grill, try making a hearty Mediterranean-style sausage casserole.
Throw in some cannellini or butter beans so you can stretch the dish out, and use just one sliced sausage per person. Finish off the dish with some tinned tomatoes, cheap vegetables like onions, peppers and carrots, and dried herbs.
RICE AND EASY: Sausages are still one of the cheapest sources of protein, so use sliced sausages instead of chicken or prawns in a stir-fry or fried rice.
Slice them into coins and toss through egg-fried rice and whatever veg you have in the fridge.
MEATY TREATS: Cheaper sausages generally mean a lower meat content, which may leave you feeling hungry.
Sausages with at least 70 per cent pork keep you fuller for longer — and you will need fewer per person.
