With people increasingly occupied by screen time and rising costs of living,traditional hobbies have fallen into neglect. Stamp collecting is one such pursuit, once beloved and now languishing.About 30 stamp collectors in Amritsar hold thousands of stamps worth several crores between them. Most have painstakingly acquired and maintained these collections over decades, many as members of the Amritsar Philately Club (APC), established in 1974-75 when it boasted 80 to 100 members.Yet these carefully curated collections remain largely unseen, buried beneath dust in almirahs. The core problem: philatelists struggle to find exhibition spaces to display their treasures or engage younger generations with the hobby.Pradeep Thacker, APC president, acknowledged that display options have virtually disappeared. The club previously held space at the General Post Office, but during renovations lost both the venue and some of their stamps. He has called for temporary exhibition areas at government and district-administered events, and suggested permanent spaces at the Partition Museum, the Attari-Wagah border crossing, Jallianwala Bagh, and the Maharaja Ranjit Singh Panorama.In his early seventies, Thacker recalled founding the APC alongside members from industry, employment and student backgrounds. He began collecting stamps while in high school, watching as the hobby evolved—initially focused on used and discarded stamps, then shifting towards costly, government-issued commemorative editions.Vinod Seth, 74, a retired banker, has found partial success. He has displayed his collection at the Military Literature Festival in Chandigarh for the past five years, providing an opportunity to share his passion. He has urged similar temporary and permanent exhibition facilities.Neeraj Jain, who owns stamps valued at over Rs 10 lakh, emphasised the financial burden collectors bear. Preservation and storage require substantial investment in almirahs, albums and other materials, consuming at least 10 per cent of a collection’s cost annually.
