A 24-year-old married woman allegedly died by suicide by hanging herself at Puj Mohalla in Kaithal on Monday, around nine months after her marriage. A two-page suicide note purportedly left behind by the woman has raised serious questions, with her family alleging that she was subjected to mental and physical harassment by her husband and other members of her in-laws’ family over dowry.Based on a complaint lodged by the deceased woman’s family, the city police have registered a case against five members of her in-laws’ family, including her husband, and started an investigation.The deceased, Jyoti, was married to Naveen in November 2025, her maternal uncle Bajrang Raj said. According to the family, despite their limited financial means, they had given jewellery and other articles as per their capacity at the time of the marriage.The family alleged that soon after the marriage, Jyoti began facing harassment from her in-laws over demands for dowry. They claimed that the alleged harassment continued to intensify and ultimately drove her to take the extreme step.Two-page note recounts alleged ordealThe purported two-page suicide note left by Jyoti describes her distress and the difficulties she allegedly faced at her matrimonial home. In the note, she reportedly referred to her parents’ financial condition and said they had spent beyond their means on her marriage. She also accused her in-laws of greed and harassment and wrote that she had lost everything.One line in the purported note — “If there is really no justice for the poor in this world, stop sacrificing the daughters of the poor” — has deeply shaken her family and people around them.Police, however, are investigating the allegations made in the note and have not yet established their veracity.The deceased’s family members were inconsolable and demanded strict action and the arrest of all those named in the complaint. They said they would continue to seek justice until action was taken against the accused.Case registered against fiveMahipal, the investigating officer at the city police station, said police reached the spot after receiving information about the incident. On the basis of the family’s complaint and the purported suicide note, a case under relevant dowry-related provisions has been registered against five members of the woman’s in-laws’ family, including Naveen Bansal, a resident of Rally Godam area.Police took custody of the body and completed the necessary legal formalities. The investigation is underway, and further action will be taken on the basis of evidence and facts that emerge during the probe.Suicide note raises questionsThe two-page note allegedly written before Jyoti’s death refers to the harassment she claimed to have faced.
