However, despite England v Scotland being the oldest rivalry in international football, dating back to 1872, one supermarket has attempted to unite the nations under one half-and-half shirt.
The Food Warehouse in Berwick-upon-Tweed has unveiled a striking shirt split down the middle with the colours of the English and the Scots.
Located in Northumberland, and a five-minute drive from the border, workers at the store – consisting of both English and Scottish nationals – will wear the unique shirt on May 28.
The store itself will also be furnished in this half-and-half style just two weeks before the World Cup begins, with decorations and staff wearing the specially designed mash-up shirts.

It comes as a part of a celebration of Berwick-upon-Tweed’s own unique heritage: famously changing nationalities between England and Scotland a record 13 times.
Centuries of England-Scotland border wars left generations of locals – often referred to as Borderers or Berwickers rather than English or Scots – with a proud heritage from north and south.
The port town was one of the most strategically important towns in medieval Britain and experienced centuries of war – with the last time it changed hands being in 1482.
As quoted by The Herald, store manager Peter Wilson said: “On a matchday in Berwick, you’re just as likely to hear Flower of Scotland in one aisle as Three Lions in the next, so we thought it was only right to support both this summer.

“We serve customers from England and Scotland every single day, and because we’re only a few minutes from the border you get a real mix of loyalties coming through the doors.
“The town has spent centuries switching between the two countries, so the half-and-half shirts felt like the perfect way to celebrate that unique history and have a bit of fun with it this summer.”
Fans reacting to the shirts on social media were left stunned, with one saying: “April the 1st is long gone.”
A second said: “That’s horrific.”

A third added: “Thought it was April Fools’ Day again.”
Another said: “Get that in the bin.”
You can only imagine what the atmosphere would be like on a matchday if England and Scotland ended up playing each other.
The two nations have never played one another at the World Cup, but have faced off twice at European Championships – most recently a 0-0 draw at Wembley in 2021 during the Covid-19 hit Euro 2020.
