Police have not disclosed a motive and it is currently unclear why the shooting took place.

The suspect has been taken into Chesterfield County Jail and is being held without bond, reports say.

He faces eight felony warrants, including four counts of malicious wounding and four counts of use of a firearm in the commission of a felony.

The gun rampage yesterday sparked a full lockdown at the Petersburg campus in Chesterfield County, 20 miles south of Richmond.

Shots rang out near the Quad Annexes, in the area of Boisseau Street and Third Avenue in the early hours of Saturday morning around 1:30am.

Chesterfield police officers arrived at the scene where they found five people wounded outside university dorms.

Harris was later found on the same day hiding in a dorm closet in Seward Hall at 4pm local time.

VSU said the lockdown had been lifted at around 8:30am on Saturday.

The university said: “A significant law enforcement presence remains on campus as the investigation into this morning’s shooting continues.

“Officers responded to the 3300 block of Boisseau Street at approximately 1:20am and discovered five individuals suffering from gunshot wounds outside VSU residence halls.

“All five were transported to area hospitals. One individual is currently in critical condition.”

Local police were previously searching for several suspects, but it is unclear whether they are still looking to arrest anyone else.

VSU is a historically Black university founded in 1882, and students are due to flood back to the school this weekend with classes beginning again on Monday.

On Friday, a special pinning ceremony was held at the campus which was attended by almost 1,500 new students.
