Tension gripped Birewala Jattan village in Mansa district after an alleged incident of desecration of the Guru Granth Sahib came to light at a local gurdwara on Wednesday. Objectionable and abusive words were reportedly found written on several pages of the holy scripture, triggering outrage among the Sikh community.Several village residents and Nihangs gathered at the gurdwara and demanded strict legal action against those responsible. The police have launched an investigation into the incident.The gurdwara’s granthi (priest), Gurwinder Singh, alleged the desecration had taken place a few months ago. He claimed that he was appointed at the gurdwara around two months ago and was informed at the time that the matter had already been reported to the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).Sources said that while inspecting the ‘saroop’ of the Guru Granth Sahib on Wednesday, the granthi noticed objectionable writings on some pages. He reportedly informed the congregation to ensure transparency and questioned why no action had been taken despite the complaint having been submitted earlier.Meanwhile, some village residents said they were unaware and came to know about it only on Wednesday. They said they heard that the local gurdwara management committee had already submitted a complaint to the SGPC and that a meeting regarding the matter was scheduled for the same day. They demanded that those responsible be identified and punished.Talking to The Tribune, Sardulgarh DSP Harpreet Singh said they were holding a meeting in the gurdwara and probing the matter.
