“The Colombian is being transferred to a hospital in Grenoble, where further tests will be carried out to assess the extent of his injuries.”

Rubio has now withdrawn from the Tour de France due to the horror crash.

A UAE spokesperson revealed that the car had managed to avoid hitting the spectator who had fallen in front of it.

They called the crash “unfortunate” and hoped Rubio has a quick recovery and is back on the bike soon.

They told Cycling Weekly: “A spectator fell forward directly into the path of the car.

“The car braked to avoid the collision. It was a very unfortunate incident and we wish Einer Rubio a speedy recovery.”

Reports have estimated that half a million people had lined the 13.8km final climb.

Organisers had cordoned off large sections of the route with barriers but there were sections before the last few kilometres without them.

It was Rubio’s second time competing in the Tour de France, having previously finished 31st in 2025.

He has previously claimed two top-10 finishes in the Giro d’Italia as well as a 2023 stage win.
